    Generator FAQs

What brands does American Electrical Contracting install or service?

We are certified to sell and service Generac and Kohler generators. We are also trained and experienced in servicing all major residential generators. We generally do not install or service portable generators, but we can install a transfer switch allowing you to use your portable generator safely, without needing extension cords.

What should I consider when choosing a backup solution for my home?

Here are a few questions to consider:

    • What circuits do I want to backup? Some customers backup their entire home. Others backup their emergency circuits only, like the kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. By prioritizing your needs and selecting a generator to meet those needs, we can fit most budgets.
    • What type of generator fuel is right for me? Liquid propane (LP), natural gas or diesel are the fuel sources for conventional generators. Our sales team will help you determine which is right for your home.
    • How will my generator get serviced? Generators need to be inspected once a year, depending on usage. This is something that a homeowner can choose to do, but we provide the option to have our factory trained team come out and inspect your generator each year, and service it if needed.

Do I get a warranty with the generator?

Depending on the manufacturer, the standard warranty is two to four years. Extended warranties can also be purchased for up to five years. Warranties typically cover parts and labor for the first few years and parts only in the last year.
