Our electricians were especially proud to be part of the large-scale installation of turtle-friendly lighting at Naval Station Mayport. The project that was just recently completed was designed to help prevent nesting turtle mothers and their hatchlings from getting confused and getting lost.
According to a 2014 report by the University of Florida’s Conservation Clinic, nesting turtles look for the moonlight when returning to the ocean. These turtles can mistake artificial light for the moon and end up in parking lots, streets or pools. This can lead to the turtles suffering from exhaustion, dehydration or becoming victim to predators.
“We are thankful to have worked with Naval Station Mayport for many years. Our long working relationship made it possible to present this option as a win-win for everyone,” said Dave Yencarelli, COO of American Electrical Contracting.
The special lighting has helped in other cities as well. In 2017, Panama City Beach reported that almost 72% of hatchlings became disoriented by artificial lighting. Meanwhile, turtle-friendly light installations in Sarasota and Manatee counties showed a 100% reduction in the number of disoriented hatchlings.
