How EV Charging Stations Work

How do EV chargers differ from each other?

There are three main categories of charging options for your EV. These include:

  • Standard Plug In (NEMA 5-15) – These adapters plug directly into a normal 110 volt and charge at a rate of 3-4 miles per hour.
  • 220V Plug Ins – There are multiple adapters that plug directly into a 220V outlet (similar to what your dryer may use). These charge at a rate of 5-30 miles per hour (depending on Tesla model and outlet type).
  • Wall Connector – The wall connector, when connected to the right electrical output, can charge your vehicle at a rate of up to 44 miles per hour.

How does the charger work?

The video below is from Tesla and shows how the charger works. The charger units have a button to open the charging port and a light that changes colors to tell you that it is working.
